There are many people who may not know that postpartum depression and the baby blues is not the same thing. The term that is commonly known as the baby blues simply describes the 3 to 7 days that follow the delivery of a baby when the mother may experience low feelings. Postpartum depression, however, describes a very serious condition that requires the continuous care of friends, family, and medical professionals that can last for a long period of time. A variety of emotions can be experienced in the individual suffering from postpartum depression and may include panic attacks, feelings of guilt because they are unhappy, extreme anxiety, agitation, spontaneous crying, suicidal thoughts, poor concentration, low levels of interest in the new baby, and problems with sleeping. What is situational depression?
The mental health condition that is called adjustment disorder is also commonly referred to by many people as situational depression. This is simply because the individuals who suffer from this disorder commonly display depression symptoms such as feelings of hopelessness, tearfulness, and a decreased interest in activities or even their job. The different between major depression and an adjustment disorder, the individual with this condition generally begin experiencing the symptoms of depression when and outside event has occurred to trigger responses that can appear to be depression. Some situations that may cause this would include the following.
- Death of a family member or loved one
- A close relationship or marriage that has ended
- Some type of accident
- A change or loss of a job
- Disasters that include hurricanes, floods, or fires
- The development of an illness
- Major changes in their life such as the birth of a baby, a marriage, or job retirement
- Ending up as the victim of a serious crime
Generally when the individual has had time to adapt to these changes and situations, the symptoms they are experiencing will lessen and then go away completely.
