What is Asthma Nebulizer (Breathing Machine)?

An asthma nebulizer is a device which turns the asthma medication from liquid to a very fine mist so that it can be more easily absorbed into the lungs. A tube with a mouthpiece sends the mist from the machine into the mouth and lungs of the asthma patient. Nebulizers are used to deliver asthma medication to infants, small children and any who are not able to use the handheld asthma inhalers. They can be used for both immediate relief and long term asthma treatment. Some models of the Nebulizers, also known as breathing machines, run on electricity and can be used at home. There are also smaller portable units that can be carried in a purse, briefcase or backpack, and these can be run on batteries.

Nebulizers are of two types: Jet nebulizers and ultrasonic nebulizers. Of the two, Jet nebulizers are more commonly used. Nebulizers can only be purchased or rented with a doctor’s prescription. They must also be cared for very carefully and certain parts of the equipment will need to be washed after each use.

Nebulizers are primarily used to treat asthma, but they are also effective for the treatment of diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
