What is Asthma? |
Asthma is a chronic disease that inflames and blocks the airways of the lungs. It is an incurable illness that mostly starts from childhood. Children who have the following properties are at high risk of developing Asthma:
Indoor air pollution from molds or toxic fumes from household cleaners or sprays can also contribute to allergies that facilitate the development of asthma. When airways react to one of these irritants, the muscle around them tightens. This in turn narrows the airways, thus causing difficulty in breathing. When the swelling worsens, the airways produce more mucus, a thick sticky liquid, which can further narrow the airways. These chain reactions can cause asthma. Asthma makes the airways become inflamed, thus making them swollen and very sensitive. The common symptoms of asthma include wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, chronic cough, but can vary from person to person. When symptoms are worse than usual, it can trigger asthma episode/attacks. Although asthma cannot be cured, proper medication can let asthmatic patients to live a normal healthy life. However, it is important to take quick action during any attack to prevent an emergency situation.
