What are Symptoms of Asthma and Flu I should be aware of?

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, asthma causes an estimated 25000 annual deaths worldwide. Knowing the symptoms of asthma beforehand can help prevent worsening of these symptoms. In addition, it can reduce the risk of having an asthma attack.

A few people do not experience any symptoms before asthma attacks while others show a marked variation in the symptoms they face.

During an asthma attack, a person usually has one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Extremely rapid breathing, resulting from shortness of breath
  • Continuous coughing
  • Pain or pressure around the chest
  • Serious wheezing while breathing
  • Retractions, i.e. tightening of neck and chest muscles
  • Trouble while talking
  • Pale face

Other symptoms which are present before an asthma attack are weakness (especially during exercise), cold or allergies, depression and trouble sleeping. Although mild in nature initially, these symptoms can worsen rapidly.

Since influenza can trigger asthma, one needs to be aware of the following symptoms of flu in order to prevent an asthma attack:

Greater amount of mucus in the cough
    • Yellow or green mucus
    • A temperature greater than 38℃, accompanied by chills
    • Sore or scratchy throat
    • Congestion of the nasal passages
    • Headaches
