What are the Causes of Asthma? |
Asthma is a chronic condition that is caused by inflammation of the air passages. It is an incurable disease, but it can be controlled with the help of proper medications. Common symptoms of asthma includes, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or a feeling of tightness in the throat and chest. Although the exact causes of asthma are unknown, there are a number of common factors that are known to trigger asthma in people. It is commonly believed, or rather witnessed, that people with history of respiratory or sinus infections can develop asthma. Also people who are allergic to certain irritants or allergens such as pollen, mold, dust, chemical irritants in household fumes and sprays, tobacco smoke, etc are susceptible to asthma attacks. Furthermore, history of allergies of asthmatic conditions in the family plays an important role in trigging allergic (atopic) asthma in successors, especially in childhood. Women undergoing hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy and menopause are also vulnerable to the development of asthma. Certain medications to control blood pressure are known to cause asthma as well. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, has also been linked to triggering asthma. The causes of asthma may differ from person to person. However, it is advised to take immediate action on the first instance of any symptoms, to prevent asthma from becoming a life-threatening condition.
