Can my child use the same Asthma Medication as Me?

Millions of children suffer from asthma. If proper medications are not taken, this can lead to worsening of asthma symptoms. Further exacerbations of these symptoms will result in an asthma attack. An asthma attack can be fatal. Thus parents should give regular and proper medications to their child to reduce the likelihood of an asthma attack.

In general, toddlers, young children and teenagers can take the same medications as adults for controlling their asthma. It is believed to be perfectly safe. However, the doses of the medications are varied, taking into consideration the height and the weight of these children.

Children can take both bronchodilator medication and anti-inflammatory medication. Physicians often recommend the use of asthma inhaler Advair for children aged above 4 years. Advair reduces inflammation of the insides of the airways and also treats bronchoconstriction. Pulmicort Respules is the anti-inflammatory drug that is often prescribed children aged above a year.

Children are often given asthma medications through a home nebulizer. A home nebulizer turns the liquid medication into a mist, which children can breathe into through a facemask.
Since many children have difficulty in breathing after using an inhaler, delivery devices which are appropriate for their age and capacity are required.
