What Do I Do If I Have An Asthma Attack? |
Asthma attacks or asthma episodes are certain situations involving breathing difficulties characterized by wheezing and shortness of breath. Although these attacks may be preceded by general symptoms, identifying these early symptoms for an upcoming attack is very important. Asthma attacks can be reduced in severity if the correct actions are undertaken immediately. If an action plan is already prescribed by the doctor, it is advised to follow that plan when an episode begins. Taking the prescribed medicine can prevent the attack from becoming worse. Care should be taken in taking the medicine though, because sometimes, out of anxiety or panic during an attack, medicines or inhalers can be mistaken for one another, or doses can be accidentally varied. It is important to relax one’s breathing and trying to breath with pursed lips. Coughing to loosen the mucus and spitting out can relieve the airways and allow normal breathing to take place. If nothing works to subdue the attack, professional help should be sought upon immediately. If attacks become severe, a trip to the emergency room might be required. During an attack, or any other medical emergency, the most vital, and often the hardest thing to do is NOT to panic. Being clear about what needs to be done during an attack can be crucial to the life of the patient.
