How Do I Recognize the Early Signs of An Asthma Attack?

Asthma attacks, or asthma episodes, are periods of breathing difficulties experienced by asthmatic patients. The length and severity of such attacks may vary greatly within patients. And so does the symptoms. However, there are some early warning signs of an upcoming asthma attack that should be considered in order to prevent asthma attacks from worsening.

Such early warning signs of an asthma attack may include:

  • Frequent coughing, especially at night, thus resulting in sleeping difficulty
  • Signs of allergies or cold, for example runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, sore throat or headache, wheezing or coughing after exercise
  • Feeling of tiredness and weakness
  • Feeling of tightness in the chest
  • Shortness of breath with increased difficulty in breathing every time
  • Disturbed sleeping patterns,
  • Changes in the readings of a peak flow meter.

Sometimes an early sign of asthma can result in a bluish tint that appears in fingertips and lips, a condition called cyanosis, which indicates an insufficient level of oxygen in blood.

The strength of such early symptoms may differ from one patient to another, and can become difficult to identify.  However, in the incidence that one or more of these symptoms take place, immediate action should be taken in order to stop an upcoming attack, or prevent an attack from becoming worse.
