How do I Identify Triggers for Asthma Prevention?

Asthma can be deadly. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, an estimated number of 25000 people die from asthma annually. Others suffer from symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and breath shortness.

Anything that causes an asthma symptom is known as an asthma trigger. Identifying your asthma triggers can help you prevent the worsening of these asthma symptoms. In addition, you will be able to decrease the likelihood of having serious asthma attacks.

Common asthma triggers include flu, allergens (such as dust mites, pollen, molds and cockroaches), environmental pollution, smokes from cigarette, a cold virus, chilled air, sinusitis, and fragrances. In people with asthma, especially in people with exercise-induced asthma (where symptoms worsen during exercise), extreme form of physical activity in unfavorable conditions (such as extremely hot, cold or dry climate) can trigger asthma.

However, elements that may trigger asthma in one person may not have any effect at all in another. That’s why you need to identify your own asthma triggers. You can do this by recording all your asthma symptoms over a period of several weeks in an asthma diary. In addition, jot down the factors – emotional or environment – that could have triggered these symptoms. In this way, if you have an asthma attack, you can be sure about the factor(s) that triggered it.
