How Can I Prevent Infections That Trigger Asthma? |
Asthma is a chronic condition in which the air passages become over-sensitive due to inflammation, and is characterized by difficulties in breathing, wheezing and coughing. Due to the inflammation, even the slightest stimuli can make the lungs overreact, including viruses that cause infections. Sinusitis and other respiratory infections can cause severe asthma attacks. Respiratory infections, such as cold or flu, can be prevented with the help of some precautionary measures. Taking care of oneself by resting and drinking lots of fluids, and maintaining good hygiene habits are important for the prevention of viral infections. Hygienic habits include washing hands frequently, avoiding company of infected people, and not touching the eyes, nose and mouth. Regular exercise also helps as it improves the cardiovascular system of the body, and lowers vulnerability to infections. Paying close attention to asthma symptoms such as difficulty in breathing and coughing with excess mucus, and reporting them immediately might reduce the chances of an upcoming asthma attack. Monitoring the airflow using a peak flow meter helps to keep track of any changes in breathing rate. Taking flu shots or pneumonia vaccine in the proper time can also prevent infections that may trigger asthma attacks. And most importantly, calling the doctor if suspected symptoms of cold or flu arise can alleviate the chances of severe infections or asthma attacks.
