Asthma Relief and Self-Care |
While the care and treatment of asthma has become a great deal simpler and sophisticated, the responsibility for the treatment still remains solely with the asthma patients themselves. While children can be taken care of by their parents, a vast majority of asthma sufferers are teenagers and adults and thus have to keep track of their treatment themselves. Asthma sufferers have to incorporate treatment and management into their very lifestyle. First of all, they should sit with their doctor and develop an asthma management plan, writing down in detail all the things they must keep a record of – their peak flow, what to do in case of a sudden asthma attack, what medication they have been taking - and all other relevant details. They should avoid exposure to allergens, including dust and pollen. They should avoid eating foods which elicit an allergic reaction. They should keep the air conditioner filters clean, and avoid using air fresheners, cleansing sprays and perfume as these can trigger asthmatic symptoms. Lastly, they should absolutely never smoke, since smoking causes inflammation in the lungs and narrows the airways, making it harder for air to pass through the lungs.
