Are there any special Diets to help with Asthma Symptoms?

There are several foods that may alleviate the symptoms of asthma.  Some foods can actually scrap the mucus layer thin in the air passages and open them up for free breathing. Spicy foods like chili, mustard, garlic and onions have this effect on the lungs.

Some foods can control inflammation in the lungs. Fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids are proven to have anti-inflammatory effects, onions are also very good, and fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C also help to control inflammation.

There is also some evidence suggesting that food containing vitamin B, like pulses and leafy green vegetables, may help prevent asthma attacks brought on by stress. Research also shows that people who have low levels of magnesium have a higher chance of developing asthma, so foods with high magnesium, such as sunflower seeds, dried figs can also be included in the asthmatics’ diet.

One thing all asthmatics should do is watch their weight. Obesity is linked with severe asthma, and even being slightly overweight can aggravate the symptoms of asthma, because excess weight puts pressure on the lungs. However, by eating healthy, exercising regularly, and sticking to the asthma management plan, asthmatics can reduce their symptoms and lead a very normal life.
