Steps for Asthma Prevention with Allergies

Allergies cause redness and swelling (inflammation) of the insides of the airways, making it difficult for air to pass through. In this way, allergies aggravate the symptoms of asthma, such as coughing, wheezing or breath shortness.

Here are a few ways through which one can stay away from allergens, i.e. substances which cause allergies, and thus prevent an asthma attack:

1. Dust Mite Prevention
Dust mites live on curtains, furniture, beddings, mattresses and curtains. Their number can be reduced by:
(a) Washing all blankets and bedding in hot water every week;
(a) Vacuuming at least twice every week and wearing a mask while vacuuming.

2. Mold Prevention
Molds can be found in warm and humid environments such as damp basements, bathrooms and laundry rooms. They also grow in decomposed vegetation. One can avoid coming in contact with molds by:
(a) Using an air conditioner to dry out the humid areas;
(b) Keeping plants out of your rooms.

3. Cockroach Prevention
Some people are allergic to the proteins found in the saliva of cockroaches. One can stay away from cockroaches by:
(a)  Keeping food in closed, tight-lidded containers;
(b) Using environmentally safe pesticides.

4. Pollen Prevention
 One can avoid being in contact with pollens by:
(a) Avoiding going outdoor in early morning.
(b) Taking a shower and changing clothes after returning home.
