What are the symptoms of Occupational Asthma?

Occupational asthma is am unique variant of asthma which occurs as a result of exposure to specific environmental conditions which exist at the patient's workplace.

The symptoms of occupational asthma are very much like the symptoms of generic asthma, which include fits of coughing, wheezing noises when breathing and difficulties faced when inhaling and exhaling. The symptoms may also include nostril blockages and/or runny noses, and may cause irritation in the eyes. These symptoms occur due to the presence of specific allergens present at one's work environment; therefore, if asthma attacks do not occur outside the workplace, there is a very good chance that it is a case of occupational asthma.

An asthma specialist must be consulted if any symptoms of occupational asthma are experienced. A full review of one's past medical history, records of the breathing troubles currently being experienced and specific tests for asthma can confirm the presence or absence of occupational asthma. Numerous medications such as bronchodilators, inhaled steroids and asthma inhalers can be used to keep occupational asthma in check. However, the most important step in dealing with occupational asthma is to maintain a safe distance from anything which can trigger an attack.
