What are the Warning Signs of a Severe Asthma Attack?

Asthma is a disease characterized by inflammation of the airways, also known as the “bronchial tubes”, of lungs. This, as well as the tightening of the bronchial muscles and the excess mucus produced by the airways, constricts the bronchial tubes, making it difficult for oxygen to pass through.

During a serious asthma attack, the bronchial tubes narrow down so much that the body organs cannot obtain the amount of oxygen they need for their proper functioning. This can ultimately lead to death. In fact, asthma causes 250,000 deaths annually. That’s why the signs of an asthma attack must be recognized as early as possible to reduce the risk of death from an attack.

Here are the most common warning signs of an asthma attack:

1. Increased coughing. The coughing becomes even more frequent at night. However, frequent coughing and wheezing may be absent.
2. Lower peak flow readings.
3. Trouble breathing. This also results in shortness of breath.
4. Fatigue, especially during exercise.
5. Feeling upset.
6.  Congestion of the nasal passages. Other symptoms of cold or allergies, such as sore throat and headache, may also be present.
7. Difficulty in sleeping at night.
8. Fast heart rate.
9. Change in color of lips or fingernails to blue or gray.
10. Trouble speaking.
11. Difficulty in concentrating.
