Who Needs Allergy Shots for Asthma?

Immunotherapy, more commonly known as “allergy shots”, desensitizes the body against allergens, such as dust mites, pollens, and pet dander. In this way, it can prevent worsening of asthma symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, and reduce the likelihood of an asthma attack that can triggered off by allergens.

According to The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, allergy shots are useful for people who:

  • Are allergic to airborne allergies, such as dust mites, that they cannot avoid being exposed to
  • Have asthma symptoms that cannot be managed by taking asthma medicines, such as inhaled corticosteroids and long acting beta agonists, or by controlling environment controls
  • Get harmful side effects from asthma medications such as bronchodilators

In addition, people who have asthma symptoms throughout the whole year or those who are able to give the due dedication for a long-term treatment can benefit from immunotherapy.

However, allergy shots can be harmful for certain groups of people. These include people with severe asthma that cannot be controlled by allergy shots and people suffering from heart diseases. Allergy shots can prove to be dangerous for people taking certain remedies such as ACE inhibitors and beta blockers. Also, children aged below 5 must never get allergy shots.
